April 2020 San Diego Superior Court Update
Extending the suspension of all non-emergency services through May 22, 2020

The San Diego Superior Court has announced that they are extending the suspension of all non- emergency services through May 22, 2020.

The news release dated 4/29/2020, states “As COVID-19 continues to be a concern for our community, we are closely monitoring the recommendations from local and state public health agencies while working to determine the safest way to resume normal operations,” said San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne. “After careful consideration, we have deemed it necessary to extend the Court’s suspension of our usual services. In the meantime, the Court has worked to increase the number of services that we are able to safely provide and we are exploring additional technological solutions to be able to continue increasing services available online and remotely until we can fully re- open our doors to the public.” With the Memorial Day holiday on May 25, it is expected that the Court is tentatively set to reopen on May 26, 2020.

In various communications with the San Diego legal community, the Court has indicated that it is taking numerous steps to prepare itself for a reopening in the near future, including installing safety equipment, ensuring protocols for social distancing, providing protective gear for staff and the public, and implementing technology wherever possible to allow remote access to court services. At this time, the Court has indicated that they are not accepting any filings in the Family Law Business Office, but they are working on providing a possible “drop-box” option and e-filing options. The Court is also taking steps to move towards possible video hearings using Microsoft Teams. However, all of these steps remain in progress and have not been fully implemented by the Court. At this time, the Court has instructed the community to check the Court website at HERE for the most updated information.

The Family Courts will continue to be open for emergency ex parte matters and for parties seeking a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order. All other matters will be continued until further notice.

We will continue to keep you apprised of any information that we receive regarding court closures. In the meantime, please contact your attorney if you have any questions about the impact on your matter as a result of this continued closure.

We thank you for your support, flexibility, and the opportunity to serve you during this time.
